2013 video of my annual presentation, “Social Media Things to Know Before You Graduate,” which I’ve been doing at Columbia Journalism School for several years now. [NOTE: I had a dental emergency all through this particular presentation and you’ll see and hear about how much pain I was in. I felt I could have fainted at any point. Google Maps overhaul leaks ahead of I/O conference

It looks like Google is set to unveil a new version of Google Maps for the desktop at I/O this week. Droid-Life discovered a description on the revised service’s landing page that reveals what’s in store: a “tailored map for every search,” a new UI reminiscent of Google’s recent mobile apps, WebGL-powered overhead views borrowed from Google Earth, Flight Search integration, and the ability to compare multiple modes of transportation on the map itself.

Even this version is better than Apple’s Maps app. This has been much longer of a wait than reasonable to get a strong one.

“The original companion was going to be very much the Victorian governess we saw at Christmas,” Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman told Radio Times, while discussing the genesis of his most recent story, Cybermen vehicle Nightmare in Silver.

“Doctor Who has its own peculiar way of being written, so I started writing it about 14 months ago. I wrote about the first ten pages and then they said they’d changed the companion from what I was expecting to something else.

“We decided they can do more weird stuff if it’s now the contemporary third incarnation so I had to reshape it so it wasn’t the governess.”

Idiots Respond To NBC Pre-Empting Sunday Night Football:

NBC pre-empted the first quarter of tonight’s 49ers-Patriots game to show President Obama’s speech at the Newtown memorial for victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. As you might expect, many football fans didn’t take kindly to this.

I’m not posting any of the tweets here; if you haven’t seen them and have an interest in the names and faces of the dregs of humanity, you can go see for yourself how unabashed racism, love of guns, love of televised sports, and hatred of government all mix together.

It’s interesting to see how many of these people have already deleted their Twitter accounts; I suppose they’ll just stick to being racist morons offline from now on. Even more interesting, though, are the geniuses who have kept their accounts and are defending themselves: “Hey, I was just making a joke.” Or, “I always talk like this about everyone.” Or, “People take everything too seriously.” Or, “I’m on the news!”

Of course, if there weren’t a ton of racist morons out there, I’m not sure what I’d write about …

Criticize Obama’s policies all you want, the second someone shows their racist views towards them they lose credibility. Unfortunately, being a racist (cough - Donald Trump - cough) isn’t as identifiable to the US without overt the use of certain words.

The NYT’s take on Obama and Romney’s digital efforts, albiet with a creepy hed. It’s not exactly a deep dive, but a decent overview introducing a general audience to a niche topic.

The hed suggests the piece is about social and the youth vote, which it really isn’t. One other problem: It also says the candidates don’t write their own posts, which they both occasionally do (Obama signs tweets -BO and has participated in Twitter and Reddit interviews, Romney gives his staff ideas for tweets but they aren’t marked).

As an alternative headline, I propose: “Romney needs to find new advisors as soon as humanely possible.” Because nothing screams “presidential behavior” like an badly-timed and entirely ill-advised harangue based on incorrect information:

Republican Mitt Romney slammed the Obama administration’s handling of foreign affairs in the wake of attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, as the presidential campaign lurched back to negative mode after a one-day pause for reflection over the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Romney branded the administration’s early response to the attacks as “disgraceful,” in a statement the former Massachusetts governor released before confirmation that the American ambassador had been killed.

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt fired back that the campaign was “shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.”

U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three American members of his staff were killed in an attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi. Libyan officials said the attack was carried out by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam’s Prophet Muhammed.

President Barack Obama, in a statement Wednesday morning, strongly condemned “this outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi.” He said he has directed administration officials “to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe.”

Romney was expected to address the killings during comments in Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday morning.

His statement said the administration’s early response to the attacks seemed to sympathize with the attackers.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo had issued a statement saying, in part, that it condemns “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions.” The statement, an apparent reference to the video, was posted hours before the Americans’ death in Libya was reported.

Romney said he was outraged by the attacks. He added, “It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a statement released at about the same time as Romney’s, condemned the attack in Libya “in the strongest terms.”

I can’t wait to hear how Romney plans to follow up this morning in Jacksonville.

What’s misandry, again?

Women perform 66% of the world’s work, but receive only 11% of the world’s income, and own only 1% of the world’s land.

Women make up 66% of the world’s illiterate adults.

Women head 83% of single-parent families. The number of families nurtured by women alone doubled from 1970 to 1995 (from 5.6 million to 12.2 million).

Women account for 55% of all college students, but even when women have equal years of education it does not translate into economic opportunities or political power.

There are six million more women than men in the world.

Two-thirds of the world’s children who receive less than four years of education are girls. Girls represent nearly 60% of the children not in school.

Parents in countries such as China and India sometimes use sex determination tests to find out if their fetus is a girl. Of 8,000 fetuses aborted at a Bombay clinic, 7,999 were female.

Wars today affect civilians most, since they are civil wars, guerrilla actions and ethnic disputes over territory or government. 3 out of 4 fatalities of war are women and children.

Rape is consciously used as a tool of genocide and weapon of war. Tens of thousands of women and girls have been subjected to rape and other sexual violence since the crisis erupted in Darfur in 2003. There is no evidence of anyone being convicted in Darfur for these atrocities.

About 75% of the refugees and internally displaced in the world are women who have lost their families and their homes.

Gender-based violence kills one in three women across the world and is the biggest cause of injury and death to women worldwide, causing more deaths and disability among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria, traffic accident, and war.
